Are you feeling the heat? It may be the middle of summer, but you’re not one to sit around waiting for the dog days of summer to pass. You want to get things done and knock out a few projects around the home. Where do you start?
Summer is a great time to tackle interior projects you haven’t gotten around to yet. These can include stubborn kitchen drawers that squeak, replacing worn stairs with new treads, and more. Here are a few indoor DIY home improvement ideas you can knock out starting today!
Take Care of the Stubborn Cabinet Doors and Drawers
Do you have cabinets or drawers that don’t quite work as well as they used to? Maybe they don’t “glide” like they used to, or maybe they’ve started to squeak or screech. If you have temperamental cabinets and drawers, from the kitchen to the bathroom to the garage, summer is a great time to fix them.
First, of course, identify what isn’t working right. Check the hinges on the doors, rails, and wheels on the drawers. It’s possible they just need a little lubrication. In most cases, a multipurpose lubricant can do the trick. If lubrication doesn’t solve the problem, take a closer look at the hardware. Cabinet and drawer hardware can wear out over time and may need to be replaced. This is an easy project that can greatly improve your quality of life.
Install New Interior Stair Treads
“Install new stair treads” isn’t a project that always makes the to-do list. However, it’s important since it can be easy to overlook stair treads until they pose a serious safety risk. You can get ahead of the risk by installing new treads. New treads can make stairs safer and more reliable, and they can also freshen up the look of your stairs.
How do you know it’s time to install new stair treads? Common signs include loose or wobbly treads, bowing or warping along the front of the treads, cracks in the material, and increased squeaking or creaking. From there, you may be able to remove and replace each tread one at a time.
Renew Water Barriers Inside Your Home
Now is a great time to take a closer look at the many water barriers around the interior of your home. From sinks to around windows to inside utility closets, look for potential sites where water might leak (or is actively leaking!). This can serve as a good precautionary measure that can save you time and money in the long run.
You can refresh water barriers with caulking and products like Flex Paste. Just remember to thoroughly clean the application area and remove any old or loose material. Use painter’s tape and a small putty knife to help achieve clean lines. From there, follow your product’s directions for the best results!
